These days, you can connect to the repeaters with your phone, listen in, and even carry on a two way conversation. Half decent radios can be had for $30 and you don't even have to have one to participate. I don't know if I miss the good ole days, or those are good new days? Then there is the whole DMR thing? Digital radio. Not to mention software defined radios. Lot's of gadgetry that makes the complex stuff of the old days look silly, but also wonderfully simple.
