My knife started out as a railroad spike. Here you can see the blacksmith starting the first heat and the glowing spike. They had a challenge to see if you could get it beaten into the rough knife form in one heat. You have to use a big hammer and hammer fast. You only have about 90 seconds before it cools down too much and you have to heat it again. I didn't want to rush it (would rather have a quality knife) so I told him I would just see how it goes. He suggested I try the bigger hammer just in case. ;)
