When we re-did the pond back in 2012, I sunk pallets for the fish and marked them with these floats. This year, they all popped to the surface at the same time and floated to the edge of the pond. All four pallet stacks must have decayed enough that set the bottle free. I find it interesting that they all happened within a week or so of each other. The nylon string shows no sign of wear at all. Neither to the plastic bottles.
