Obama's 23 Executive Orders translated from the formal bureaucratese

Obama's 23 Executive Orders translated from the formal bureaucratese

Editor's Note: This succinct, pithy analysis of Barack Obama's 23 Executive Orders was posted yesterday on the Internet and has quickly gone viral. The original author appears to be this blogger.

[UPDATE: According to multiple sources, the President did not, as was widely reported, sign executive orders, but rather executive actions and presidential memoranda.]

So Obama released his Executive Orders to Prevent Maniacs From Being Maniacs today. I've taken the time to translate the summaries into plain English below:

1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.

Tell the government to follow the law.

2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.

Tell the regulators to stop the stupid and useless regulations.

3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.

Pay the states back for the unfunded mandates that the Feds keeps making.

4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.

Tell the Attorney General to do his job.

5. Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.

Start another unfunded mandate. (See #3.)

6. Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.

Tell FFLs how to do something no one is ever going to bother to do.

7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.

Do the same thing the NRA already does, only half as well at twice the cost.

8. Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).

Do what Underwriters Laboratories already does, only half as well at twice the cost.

9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.

Tell the Feds to do their jobs.

10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.

Tell the DOJ to do its job.

11. Nominate an ATF director.

Tell myself to do my job.

12. Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.

Spend more money.

13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.

Tell everyone to do their [$%^&*#] jobs.

14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.

Tell the doctors to figure out why it isn't the feds' fault that they aren't doing their jobs.

15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.

Figure out a way to push "smart guns" that don't exist and wouldn't be useful as guns if they did.

16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.

Tell everyone that Obamacare doesn't actually mean what it says.

17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.

Tell everyone that, seriously, Obamacare doesn't actually mean that. We had to pass it to find out what was in it, after all.

18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.

Tell everyone that I've been a partisan hack for the last month every time I said the NRA was crazy to want to post more cops in schools.

19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.

Do the same thing that every police agency in the country has already done, only half as well and at ten times the cost.

20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.

Tell doctors what they already know.

21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.

Tell people what the parts of Obamacare that don't say anything say.

22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.

Tell HHS to do their job.

23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

Hand the rest of the job of telling everyone to do their jobs off to someone else so it is no longer my job.

The 2nd Amendment Is What Makes The Other Nine Possible - Forbes

The 2nd Amendment Is What Makes The Other Nine Possible

One of two pro-gun activists protests against ...

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. – Second Amendment

As debates over firearms simmer and President Obama mulls sweeping firearm restrictions via executive orders,, media personalities like Piers Morgan dismiss guests defending gun rights with contempt. You'd think resistance to disarmament amounts to culpability for the Sandy Hook slaughter.

Yet, as John Lott's bestseller, More Guns, Less Crime, highlights crime rates have tumbled while gun ownership has soared, including permits to carry concealed weapons. America has more murder than many similarly advanced countries, but overall violent crime, save inner-cities plagued by family breakdown, remains below peer nations. The streets in Mr. Morgan's England are far more dangerous.

Dr. Lott explained to CNN's Soledad O'Brien that all but one mass shooting in America occurred within "gun-free" areas. For instance, the recent Colorado movie rampage happened in the only theater in the vicinity (of seven) which forbids firearms. Lott observed that Germany, despite draconian gun restrictions has suffered worse mass murders. Criminals don't follow firearm laws, thus Lott advises eliminating "gun-free" zones.

Ms. O'Brien was dumbfounded.

Most liberals' only experiences with firearms come via headline instigating crimes, which jade their conception of an armed citizenry. Homeowners defending the hearth rarely attract much media notice; nor will many liberals be found frequenting shooting ranges or hunting. Rather than familiarize themselves with firearms, it's apparently more rewarding to delight in self-righteous approbation by restricting rights for those who haven't harmed anyone.

An old adage attributed to Oliver Wendell Holmes warns, "Hard cases make bad laws." The Left milks tragedy trying to radically diminish longstanding rights. The forces seeking to confiscate firearms strike, using grief for license. Rahm Emmanuel promised, "Never let a crisis go to waste." Team Obama, which previously stooped to Fast and Furious in an attempt to discredit gun ownership, now shamelessly leverages Sandy Hook to tighten federal control.

Former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell let slip the gun-control crowd's desperation, "The good thing about Newtown is, it was so horrific that I think it galvanized Americans" potentially into rallying for more rigid gun laws. Americans ought to be very circumspect before succumbing to more stringent firearm qualifications. Restricting guns from people with mental problems sounds logical, but forces adamantly opposed to firearms find even patriots similarly suspicious. Likewise, gun registration could segue into a roadmap for disarmament.

At its core, gun-control is about submission, not crime.

The Missouri Information Analysis Center, a federal organ of Department of Homeland Security, included veterans, pro-life advocates, gun enthusiasts, Ron Paul supporters, and those who disdain the Fed or UN as potential terrorists. Essentially anyone who dreads untrammeled central authority was suspect. Could unfashionable political stands ultimately be deemed mental disorders or national threats in a bid to disarm dissent?

MIAC backtracked, but it's likely there remain those with a similar outlook merely lying dormant until an opportunity arises. Piers Morgan's insult-laden tirades against gun advocates conjure Josef Stalin's infamous, "Ideas are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemies have guns, why should we let them have ideas?" Morgan and many liberals can tolerate no ideas, no life-saving solutions short of severe strictures on "assault weapons."

No controls on guns, school security or other changes will deter a deranged murderer. Good Samaritans toting guns can minimize the carnage; reason enough for an armed populace, but the Second Amendment doesn't pertain to self-defense, hunting or sport shooting. We have an obvious right – nay duty – to defend our families and neighbors, which are covered under the catchalls of the Ninth and Tenth Amendments, but the Second Amendment concerns resistance to federal hegemony.

Disarmament is the necessary precursor to tyranny. History's most lethal mass murderers have been dictators presiding over unarmed subjects. Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot never faced significant civilian resistance. Oh that the Jews had been better armed. The Warsaw uprising began with one small pistol.

George Mason, principle author behind the Bill of Rights, advised, "What is the militia? It is the whole people, except for a few public officials." Later Mason clarified, "A well-regulated militia, composed of the Gentlemen, Freeholders, and other Freemen was necessary to protect our ancient laws and liberty from the standing army." Bearing arms remains an inalienable "right of the people." Mason wanted each man to suitably furnish for himself weaponry, supplies and training.

James Madison articulated a foundational principle informing our Constitution, "All men having power ought to be distrusted to a certain degree." Proper suspicion of political authority remains pivotal to America's lasting liberty. Madison later noted in Federalist 46, "Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, …" Madison considered decentralized government and gun rights as the essential checks against despotic rulers.

Many European nations whose gun laws the Left wants to emulate here have endured murderous dictators. America has yet to suffer such subjugation. To wit, the most jealous guardian of liberty throughout the founding generation, Patrick Henry advanced, "[My] great object is that every man be armed."

Washington has gradually eroded our unalienable rights while centralizing control. The Second Amendment provides a final redoubt guarding what remains of the other freedoms enumerated in the Bill of Rights. Or, as Harald Zieger, an émigré from behind the Iron Curtain, neatly summarizes, "America is the greatest nation on earth because it's the only one with a First Amendment. We're the only nation with a First Amendment because we're the only one with a Second Amendment."

A well-armed citizenry erects a necessary buttress against tyranny.

It's a "make hay while the sun shines" kind of weekend.

Since yesterday morning I've completed 9 windows. Two just needed trimmed and sealed. Two just needed mounted, trimmed and sealed, but 5 were from scratch. Some insulating and caulk tomorrow. I'm seriously thankful for the break in the weather! Boy am I beat, though!

Guns and communists...

RUSSIAN NEWS OUTLET PRAVDA PRINTS SURPRISING OPINION COLUMN WARNING USA: 'NEVER GIVE UP YOUR GUNS'

Russian News Outlet Pravda Warns Americans: Never Give Up Your Guns

Back in November, the Russian news outlet Pravda (formerly the official press of the USSR), surprised everyone when it published a scathing opinion column labeling President Obama a "Communist without question promoting the Communist Manifesto without calling it so."

And they appear to have done it again, this time weighing on in the gun control debate currently gripping the United States.

Written by Stanislav Mishin, the opinion piece, titled "Americans, never give up your guns," begins:

These days, there are few few things to admire about the socialist, bankrupt and culturally degenerating USA, but at least so far, one thing remains: the right to [bear] arms and use deadly force to defend one's self and possessions.

Mishin has rocked the boat before, writing in 2009 about American capitalism being "gone with a whimper."  Like the current article, it was originally published on the author's personal blog before being picked up by Pravda.

By and large, he uses Russian history as a warning for what could occur in a worst-case scenario:

One of the first things [the Soviets] did was to disarm the population. From that point, mass repression, mass arrests, mass deportations, mass murder, mass starvation were all a safe game for the powers that were. The worst they had to fear was a pitchfork in the guts or a knife in the back or the occasional hunting rifle. Not much [to worry about] for soldiers.

Mishin also reminds that retired military officers and other armed citizens were initially promised that if they stayed out of the way, they would be left alone.  When they objected, many citizens were asked to "register their weapons" and were "promptly shot."

The article continues to examine the continuing denial of the "basic right" to self defense roughly two decades after the fall of the Soviet Union:

While President Putin pushes through reforms, the local authorities, especially in our vast hinterland, do not feel they need to act like they work for the people. They do as they please, a tyrannical class who knows they have absolutely nothing to fear from a relatively unarmed population. This in turn breeds not respect but absolute contempt and often enough, criminal abuse.

For those of us fighting for our traditional rights, the US 2nd Amendment is a rare light in an ever darkening room. Governments will use the excuse of trying to protect the people from maniacs and crime, but in reality, it is the bureaucrats protecting their power and position. In all cases where guns are banned, gun crime continues and often increases. As for maniacs, be it nuts with cars (NYC, Chapel Hill NC), swords (Japan), knives (China) or home made bombs (everywhere), insane people strike…

The excuse that people will start shooting each other is also plain and silly. So it is our politicians saying that our society is full of incapable adolescents who can never be trusted? Then, please explain how we can trust them or the police, who themselves grew up and came from the same culture?

No it is about power and a total power over the people…Do not be fooled by a belief that progressives, leftists hate guns. Oh, no, they do not. What they hate is guns in the hands of those who are not marching in lock step of their ideology.  [Emphasis added]

The surprising article concludes with one last warning to Americans: "…do not fall for the false promises and do not extinguish the light that is left to allow humanity a measure of self respect."
